The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a new offensive coordinator, Byron Leftwich, and he is already singing the praises of their quarterback, Baker Mayfield. In an interview with the media, Leftwich raved about Mayfield’s talent and potential, saying that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Leftwich was asked what he thought about Mayfield and his response was enthusiastic. “The kid is a baller, plain and simple. He has a natural feel for the game that you really can’t teach. He’s got great instincts, a quick release, and he’s mobile enough to make plays with his legs. Plus, he’s got a big arm and can make all the throws.”
Leftwich went on to explain that Mayfield has an infectious energy and leadership ability that makes him a great teammate and a natural leader. “He’s got that swagger and confidence that you want in your quarterback. He can take command of the huddle and make everyone around him better. And he’s not afraid to put the team on his back and carry us to victory.”
The new offensive coordinator also praised Mayfield’s work ethic and dedication, saying that he has seen the young quarterback put in countless hours of work in the offseason and during training camp. “Baker is always looking for ways to improve his game. He studies film, he works on his footwork and mechanics, and he’s always asking questions and seeking feedback from the coaching staff. He’s a true student of the game.”
Leftwich’s assessment of Mayfield comes as no surprise to fans and analysts who have been following the quarterback’s career. Mayfield burst onto the scene in 2018, winning the NFL Rookie of the Year award and leading the Browns to their best season in over a decade. He followed that up with a solid 2019 campaign, posting over 3,800 yards passing and 22 touchdown passes.
With a new coaching staff in place, Mayfield is looking to take the next step in his development and lead the Browns back to the playoffs. If Leftwich’s praise is any indication, Mayfield is more than up to the task. “I believe Baker has all the tools to be one of the elite quarterbacks in the league,” said Leftwich. “It’s just a matter of putting it all together and executing on the field. And I believe he’s going to do just that.”
