Former Florida State Seminole Matthew Cleveland has announced he is transferring to the University of Miami men’s basketball team, becoming the latest five-star recruit to join the Hurricanes program. This transfer marks a significant move as the former rivals come together, with Cleveland hoping to make a significant impact on the Miami team.

Cleveland, a top-20 player in the 2021 high school class, made an immediate impact for Florida State after he arrived on campus last season. He averaged 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game while playing in every game for the Seminoles.

Despite Cleveland’s strong performance for Florida State, he decided to move on from the program, citing a desire for a change of scenery. He joins a Miami team that finished 10-17 last season but is looking to gain momentum after adding a few key transfers this offseason.

The move also marks Cleveland’s second chance to play in South Florida. Originally from Georgia, Cleveland moved to his father’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, as a freshman in high school before moving to Florida for his final season.

Given Cleveland’s skillset and size, the 6-foot-6 wing should provide an immediate boost to the Hurricanes. The former McDonald’s All-American is known for his athleticism, perimeter shooting ability, and versatility on both ends of the court.

Miami head coach Jim Larranaga praised Cleveland’s game in a statement, saying, “Matthew is a very talented player, who adds to the high level of athleticism and skill we have recruited in recent years. He will help us in many ways, and we are thrilled to welcome him to our basketball family.”

The addition of Cleveland to Miami’s roster puts the Hurricanes in a position to improve their standings in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). While Miami has struggled in recent years, the team has made progress in recruiting and will count on their most talented players to lead them to success this season.

Overall, Cleveland’s transfer from a rival to Miami is an interesting development that is sure to provide some fireworks when he faces off against his former team. The talented wing should be an excellent addition to the Miami team, and his progress will be watched eagerly by Hurricanes fans.
